Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone’s comments on abortion and Catholic teaching continue drawing attention years after his public dispute with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over Holy Communion.
Cordileone, the Archbishop of San Francisco, has repeatedly stated that Catholic leaders and public officials who support abortion rights are acting in conflict with Church teaching on the sanctity of human life. In 2022, he announced that Pelosi would not be permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Archdiocese of San Francisco unless she publicly repudiated her support for abortion rights or no longer presented herself for Communion there.
Supporters of the Archbishop praised the move as a firm defense of Catholic doctrine and consistency in applying Church teaching. Critics, however, argued that the decision risked further politicizing the Eucharist and deepening divisions within both the Church and American politics.
The controversy became part of a much broader national debate involving abortion, religious conviction, the role of faith in public office, and how religious institutions respond when political leaders publicly support positions that conflict with official doctrine.
