Hurricane Melissa was set to pummel Jamaica on Tuesday as a catastrophic Category 5 storm, the strongest to lash the island since recordkeeping began 174 years ago.
“There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness said.
But the prime minister also said he’s been on his knees in prayer for the country, and is calling on others around the world to join him.
“I’m a firm believer in prayer. I believe in our national anthem, which calls on the Almighty to guard us with His mighty hand… It is clear there is a divine hand at work, and we should continue to petition as much as we can.”
A life-threatening storm surge of up to 13 feet is expected across southern Jamaica, with officials concerned about the impact on some hospitals along the coastline
