John Adams on Christianity and America’s Founding

America’s first Vice President and second President John Adams was a man of Christian faith who referred to Christianity and God on many occasions. He wrote, “I have examined all religions, and the result is that the Bible is the best book in the world.”

He also pointed out that America’s Founders were guided by Christianity in the quest for Independence. Adams wrote in a letter to Thomas Jefferson in 1813:

“The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”
