Images from Brazil are going viral after a Catholic priest interrupted the Eucharist to comfort an elderly man who began crying during Mass.
Rather than continuing on, the priest stepped away from the altar, embraced the man, and offered him comfort in a quiet but powerful moment that has resonated with millions online. What the priest didn’t find out until afterwards is the man had just received a phone call informing him that his 20-year-old grandson had died by suicide.
Explaining his actions later, the priest said:
“We cannot serve the invisible God and ignore the person in front of us.”
His words echo Scripture directly. The Bible says:
“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.”-1 John 4:20
True ministry is not just about ritual, but about loving God and loving others. In a world often marked by hurry and indifference, this simple pause spoke volumes: love is never an interruption—it’s the evidence of God’s love being in us.
