Matthew 4 study 🌿

This chapter begins in stark contrast to the end of the last one. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After he had fasted for forty days and forty nights, Satan tempted Jesus in three specific ways.

First, Satan appealed to the flesh: ‘Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” ‘Matthew 4:3. Jesus responded by saying, ‘He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” ‘ Matthew 4:4. Here Jesus cited Deuteronomy 8:3. On that note, this quote by @spurgeonbooks really stood out to me as well:“It is noteworthy that all passages quoted by our Lord are from the Book of Deuteronomy, which book has been so grievously assailed by the destructive critics. Thus did our Lord put special honor upon that part of the Old Testament which he foresaw would be most attacked. The past few years have proved that the devil does not like Deuteronomy: he would fain avenge himself for the wounds it caused him on this most memorable occasion.”

Jesus fought temptation with scripture. If it worked then, why wouldn’t it work now? These verses show the importance of memorizing scripture and being equipped with the sword of the Spirit. “Out flashed the sword of the Spirit: our Lord will fight with no other weapon. He could have spoken new revelations, but chose to say, ‘It is written.’ – Charles Spurgeon

Next, the devil took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple in the holy city and appealed to the pride of life: ‘and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you , and they will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. ” ‘ Matthew 4:6. Satan took this verse out of context by omitting some of the words. Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.” ‘ Matthew 4:7.

Y’all, even Satan knew scripture.
