Medical Groups Advise Delaying Gender Surgeries for Minors

Several major medical groups are changing their position on children getting transgender surgery, now advising against it.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, which represents about 11,000, or roughly 90% of all plastic surgeons in the U.S., has issued a statement advising members to delay “gender-related breast/chest, genital, and facial surgery” until the patient is 19 years old.

The group reports that, “a substantial proportion of children … experience resolution or significant reduction of distress by the time they reach adulthood absent medical or surgical intervention.”
