President Donald Trump publicly called on U.S. senators to immediately pass the SAVE America Act, emphasizing voter identification, proof of citizenship, and strict limits on mail-in ballots as central election reforms. In remarks shared on social media and during a televised interview, Trump said the legislation is focused solely on voting integrity, stating, “We want people to have voter ID. We want people to have proof of citizenship.”
Trump argued that mail-in ballots should be prohibited except in limited cases, such as for military service members, illness, or other “reasonable but good” excuses. He described widespread mail-in voting as “very corrupt,” claiming, “No country in the world does what we do,” and asserted that ballots are sent out indiscriminately with little accountability.
According to Trump, the SAVE America Act enjoys overwhelming public support, polling at roughly 94 percent overall, including strong backing among Democratic voters, while opposition comes primarily from “Democrat politicians.” He also criticized lawmakers who oppose photo ID requirements, noting that members of Congress themselves must show identification to vote on the House floor.
Trump framed the bill as essential to protecting elections ahead of upcoming midterm contests, repeatedly asking how lawmakers could justify opposing legislation titled the “SAVE America Act,” which he said simply affirms that voters are American citizens and that elections are conducted securely.
