While many cultural commentators label Western Europe as post-Christian, a massive gathering in the Netherlands is challenging that narrative with a powerful declaration of faith. An estimated 63,000 believers packed into the Opwekking Pentecost Conference, standing shoulder-to-shoulder to lift their hands in public worship and prayer to Jesus Christ.
The multi-day event, which marks over five decades of ministry, transformed a local venue into an epicenter of spiritual renewal. Organizers emphasized that the massive physical turnout was mirrored by an extraordinary digital response, with 700,000 people participating online.
‘The Pentecost Conference no longer belongs to Opwekking, but to the Netherlands. Given by God to us all,’ declared Ruben Flach, managing director of the event. He noted that the true heart of the movement stretches far beyond a weekend gathering. ‘The effect of the coming of the Holy Spirit is more powerful than miracles and signs: it causes people to go into the world to bring the Gospel.’
For attendees, the sheer scale of the event represents a profound spiritual hunger in a region often viewed as deeply secularized. Leaders expressed gratitude for the visible unity among different Christian backgrounds, stating their enduring mission: ‘We desire that people become familiar with who Jesus is and with the powerful work of the Holy Spirit.’
