Astronaut’s Lunar Awe Leads to Chaplain After Splashdown

When Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman returned from the heavens, he found that science alone couldn’t hold the weight of what he had witnessed. Despite describing himself as ‘not really a religious person,’ the sheer magnitude of the lunar mission left him seeking a Navy chaplain immediately after splashdown.

‘I just broke down in tears,’ Wiseman admitted, recalling the moment he saw the chaplain’s cross. For a man who just navigated the ‘otherworldly’ sight of the sun vanishing behind the moon, the experience was beyond human comprehension. He realized there was ‘no other avenue’ to process the awe of the cosmos than through a spiritual lens.

His crewmate, Victor Glover, a devout Christian, shared that same profound sense of wonder. ‘I am a religious person, but everything else is the same,’ Glover noted, highlighting that whether a believer or a seeker, the glory of creation leaves the human soul yearning for a higher connection.
