Eclipse, Assyria, and a Biblical Link

In 763 BC, Assyrian annals recorded a total solar eclipse—a rare and striking event also predicted by the prophet Amos in the Bible: “I will cause the sun to go down at noon” (Amos 8:9). This eclipse coincided with the reign of Jeroboam II in Israel and the Assyrian king Ashur-Dan III’s military campaigns against Israel.

The Assyrian king Pul demanded heavy tribute from Israel to avoid conquest, confirming the biblical account of Assyria’s pressure on Israel. This archaeological record ties celestial phenomena, prophecy, and historical events together, affirming the Bible’s historical reliability.
