A Seattle pastor who was twice arrested in 2022 for publicly reading the Bible was vindicated last week in federal district court. Pastor Matthew Meinecke was arrested after activists reacted hostilely to his Christian speech, leading police to remove and later arrest him at two separate public events. A federal judge ruled that the city violated his First Amendment rights, granting injunctive relief, damages, and attorney fees.
The court found that police improperly silenced Meinecke’s speech based on audience reaction, calling it an unconstitutional “heckler’s veto.” Following the ruling, Meinecke expressed relief at being able to move forward and return to sharing his faith publicly.
The case serves as a reminder that convictions grounded in conscience often face resistance, yet persistence, patience, and truth have a way of standing firm over time—even when challenged in difficult spaces.
