The Garden of Gethsemane, at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, is a key biblical site where Jesus prayed before His arrest. The name “Gethsemane” means “oil press,” reflecting its history as an olive grove, a role confirmed by archaeological evidence and ancient writings. All four Gospels describe this location as the place where Jesus, overwhelmed with sorrow, prayed fervently before being betrayed by Judas Iscariot and arrested (Matthew 26:36-56). Some olive trees in the garden are carbon-dated to be nearly 900 years old, with studies suggesting they may descend from those present during Jesus’ time. Today, the Church of All Nations, built on the site, preserves its significance for pilgrims worldwide.
