Garima Gospels: Ethiopia’s Ancient Illustrated Bible

Ethiopia is home to the Garima Gospels, believed to be the world’s oldest illustrated Christian Bible.

The manuscripts are kept at the Abba Garima Monastery in northern Ethiopia.

Carbon dating places them between the 4th and 7th centuries, making them over 1,500 years old.

Written in the ancient Ge’ez language, the texts feature vivid illustrations of biblical figures.

They reflect Ethiopia’s deep Christian heritage and its early role in the history of Christianity.
