Genna: Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas in Addis Ababa

“Merry Christmas from Ethiopia ! Thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians gathered in Addis Ababa on January 7 to celebrate the birth of their Savior, Jesus Christ, according to the ancient Julian calendar. In Ethiopia this day is known as Genna and marks one of the most sacred feasts in the Christian year.

The celebration began on Christmas Eve with a large candlelight ceremony and midnight Mass, where worshippers, many dressed in traditional white garments, filled Meskel Square for prayers, hymns, and all‑night vigils.

Before the feast, believers observe a 43‑day fast known as the Nativity Fast, preparing both body and spirit for the joyous arrival of Christmas.

Families traditionally break the fast after midnight, sharing meals and rejoicing together. The vibrant worship services are deeply rooted in centuries‑old Christian tradition, reflecting Ethiopia’s ancient Orthodox heritage, which traces back to the Fourth Century.

Despite ongoing regional challenges, including insecurity in parts of the country, the faithful gathered in unity and joy, lifting prayers for peace, hope, and blessings on the nation as they honored the birth of Christ.
