During a recent Q&A session, a 38-year-old churchgoing woman named Nicole from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, publicly shared a deep spiritual dilemma with author and speaker Jackie Hill Perry. Nicole, who grew up in the church, fasted, and prayed, revealed that she is currently in a same-sex marriage but constantly carries what she described as a ‘cloud.’
Host Tysean Jackson directly asked Perry if Christ could truly be at the priority and helm of a homosexual relationship or marriage.
‘No,’ Perry responded. ‘And I say that with a heaviness.’
Perry shifted the focus from modern cultural debates to the fundamental question of biblical surrender and the cost of following Jesus, referencing Philippians 3. She diagnosed the situation as a form of spiritual double-mindedness rather than issuing a blunt condemnation.
‘I think some people can be quick to condemn and not realizing that there is a level of grief that comes with repentance,’ Perry explained. ‘To gouge out the eye hurts, to cut off the hand hurts. It is painful.’
According to Perry, the spiritual ‘fogginess’ Nicole experienced stems from maintaining competing loyalties. ‘I think there could be many idols, to be honest,’ Perry noted. ‘And idols do fog us, so that fogginess will clear once you surrender. But you have to define what you are surrendering.’ Perry concluded the interaction by reading 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, pointing to the gospel’s power to transform past identities into holiness through Christ.
