Imagine a 12-year-old girl, an artist who loved anime, standing between a gunman and her friends. That was Kylie Smith. During the recent school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada, Kylie didn’t run for cover—she used her own body to shield her classmates. She lived out the heart of Jesus, who taught us that the greatest love is to lay down your life for others.
But the tragedy didn’t end there. Kylie’s family, already broken by her loss, wanted to hold a memorial to honor her brave life. Instead, they had to cancel everything. Why? Because they received direct, dangerous threats from someone they know. The police (RCMP) are now investigating why several grieving families are being harassed and threatened during their darkest hour.
It’s hard to understand why such evil follows such a beautiful sacrifice. As Christians, we know we are in a spiritual battle. While the family cannot meet in public to say goodbye to their daughter, we can surround them with a wall of prayer that no threat can break.
Kylie was a shield for her friends. Now, it’s our turn to be a shield for her family through our faith and our voices. We pray for their safety, for justice, and for the peace that only God can give when words are not enough.
