Matt Rife Says He Was Baptized After Grandfather’s Death

Comedian Matt Rife revealed he was baptized in August in a friend’s swimming pool following the death of his grandfather, saying the loss prompted him to think more deeply about faith and eternity.

Speaking on the “History Hyenas” podcast, the 29-year-old clarified it was a Christian baptism. Although he did not grow up in a religious household and only attended church occasionally with friends, his grandfather’s passing two years ago sparked new spiritual questions. “I’ll never see this person again,” Rife recalled thinking. “So something has to exist.”

While admitting he finds church “excruciatingly boring,” Rife said he still desires belief. “I want to believe in God,” he stated, adding that attending church has become part of that process.

Known for his edgy comedy and currently selling out arenas on his “Stay Golden Tour,” Rife recently released a memoir, Your Mom’s Gonna Love Me, which became a New York Times bestseller.

He joins a growing list of comedians publicly discussing faith. Rob Schneider recently shared his conversion to Catholicism and said he plans to shift his comedy in light of his beliefs. Russell Brand also announced his baptism and has openly documented his Christian journey. Meanwhile, Joe Rogan, though not a professing Christian, has frequently discussed religion’s moral and cultural significance on his podcast.

Rife’s baptism marks a personal step in what appears to be an ongoing spiritual exploration shaped by grief, questions about eternity and a desire to believe.
