Mel Gibson says his upcoming sequel to The Passion of the Christ will take audiences far beyond the crucifixion and resurrection story most people expect.
Speaking about the long awaited project, Gibson explained that in order to tell the story properly, the films must explore the unseen spiritual realm connected to Christ’s victory over death.
“In order to tell the story properly,” Gibson said, “you have to really start with the fall of the angels.” He added, “You need to go to hell.”
The upcoming films, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One and Part Two, have reportedly finished filming in Italy and are currently scheduled for release in 2027.
Gibson has also teased that the movies will explore themes involving spiritual warfare, fallen angels, and the battle between darkness and redemption behind the resurrection story.
The original Passion of the Christ became one of the most impactful faith based films ever released, and anticipation surrounding the sequel continues to grow among Christian audiences.
