Pentagon Worship Service Highlights Psalm 144 and Prayer for Troops

At a recent monthly worship service held within the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took to the lectern to deliver a message rooted in the English Standard Version of Psalm 144. Highlighting God as a protector and the source of strength in battle, Hegseth shared his hope that the U.S. military would embody the warrior qualities described by King David.

Addressing the gathered personnel, Hegseth urged the integration of faith into the weight of military leadership. ‘If we trust Christ we can never go wrong… bow your head with me,’ he stated, calling for a moment of collective prayer. The Secretary’s remarks underscored a vision of a military guided by spiritual conviction.

Pastor Brooks Potteiger echoed this sentiment during his sermon, which is part of the 2026 series themed ‘The Call to Stand Firm’ (1 Corinthians 15:58). Potteiger prayed for the U.S. military to serve as instruments of God’s work, specifically asking for divine guidance over missions involving the National Guard, domestic law enforcement, and international hotspots like Venezuela.

The service concluded with a plea for the disruption of ‘evil plans’ globally and a prayer for the resilience of those in uniform. While these gatherings have drawn scrutiny from church-state advocates regarding First Amendment boundaries, the focus for those in attendance remained clear: seeking courage and spiritual fortification through the Gospel.
