A Christian high school student in Katy Independent School District was initially told she could not paint a Bible verse or Christian symbol on her senior parking spot. The school said it would violate the separation of church and state, even though other students were allowed to paint non-religious messages, symbols, and slogans.
The student’s family challenged the decision, arguing that student expression must be treated equally. After public attention and legal pressure, the district reversed its decision, allowing the student to display her Christian message.
Bottom line:
If a school permits student expression, it cannot single out religious speech for exclusion.
