Surviving the Deep: Harrison Okene’s Miracle Rescue

In 2013, Harrison Okene was serving as a cook on a tugboat off the coast of Nigeria when disaster struck. In the early morning hours, violent waters caused the vessel to suddenly capsize and sink.

The boat plunged nearly 100 feet to the ocean floor, trapping eleven crew members inside. Rescue teams assumed there were no survivors.

But they were wrong.
Harrison Okene was still alive.

He found himself barefoot, submerged in darkness, surrounded by icy water—clinging to life inside a tiny four-foot air pocket within the wreckage. There was no food, no light, and no escape. Humanly speaking, there was no hope.

So Harrison cried out to Jesus. Alone and terrified, he prayed continuously and recited Scripture. One verse stayed with him—Psalm 54:4: “Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.”

For three days—without scuba gear, without light, without any natural means of survival—Harrison prayed. On the third day, rescue divers entered the wreck to recover bodies. One diver nearly passed him by—until Harrison reached out and touched his hand.

To this day, scientists cannot fully explain how Harrison survived without oxygen poisoning or hypothermia. But Harrison has never doubted the reason.

“I was the only one who survived,” he says. “By God’s grace.”

Now he shares his testimony to declare one simple truth: God still saves. Let this be a reminder—when you feel trapped, forgotten, or buried in darkness, God sees you. He is with you. And He can make a way where no way seems possible.

He is still the God of miracles!
He is still the God who rescues!
