In the fading light off the coast of Quindalup, Western Australia, a family’s afternoon on the water turned into a fight for survival. Swept out to sea by powerful currents, Austin Appelbee and his family found themselves drifting into the vast darkness of the Indian Ocean.
With no hope of drifting back, Austin’s mother made a choice no parent should ever face: she sent her teenage son to swim for help alone.
Austin battled the elements for four grueling hours, covering nearly four kilometers. When his kayak became a hindrance, he abandoned it. When his life jacket slowed his progress against the relentless waves, he took it off. In the silence of the deep, his only company was his faith.
‘I don’t think it was me who did it — it was God the whole time,’ Austin told the BBC. As exhaustion set in, he didn’t rely on physical strength alone. Instead, he filled the air with Christian songs and constant petitions. ‘I kept praying and praying, and I said to God, ‘I’ll get baptized, I’ll get baptized.’’
Exhausted and collapsing onto the shore, Austin finally raised the alarm. Hours later, the miracle was complete: his mother and siblings were found alive, drifting nearly 14 kilometers offshore. For Austin, the survival of his family wasn’t just luck—it was an answered prayer and a testament to a God who hears the cries of the lost.
