NASA astronaut Barry “Butch” Wilmore was originally scheduled for an eight-day mission aboard the International Space Station, but due to spacecraft technical issues, he was forced to remain in orbit for more than nine months. After safely returning to Earth in March 2025, he said that maintaining his faith life during his time in space was essential to him.
Wilmore said that while aboard the space station, he stayed connected to his home church by participating in worship services online, which provided critical spiritual support. His longtime faith community is Providence Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas, and he also joined services streamed from Grace Baptist Church in Tennessee.
Wilmore stated, “The Word of God continually infilling me — I need it,” and described his pastor as “the best pastor on this planet — or in this case,” emphasizing how meaningful it was for him to worship together with his church family, even remotely.
The report also noted that Wilmore sang Amazing Grace with fellow astronauts in orbit and found strength through spiritual practices and community support, which helped him endure the challenges of an extended stay in space.
