Former U.S. Sen. Dr. Ben Sasse recently opened up about facing stage 4 pancreatic cancer, sharing how suffering has deepened his faith and clarified what truly matters.
Despite intense treatments and physical suffering, he and his wife have experienced a deep sense of peace, grounded in the hope of the gospel.
Quoting Philippians, he said, “To live is Christ, to die is gain,” expressing confidence in Christ’s finished work—justification, sanctification, and the promise of future glorification.
Sasse shared that pain and the prospect of death have quickly shattered idols in his life, exposing trivial pursuits and deepening his dependence on God. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging mortality, taking Sabbath rest seriously, and shaping life around eternal truths rather than temporary achievements.
Reflecting on 1 Corinthians 15, he affirmed the Christian hope of resurrection, saying believers can face death with confidence because Christ has risen and is preparing a place for them.
