SBC Approves First Vote on Mohler Amendment Limiting Pastors to Men

Southern Baptist messengers have given initial approval to Albert Mohler’s Truth and Unity Amendment, which would clarify that churches cooperating with the SBC may not place women in the office of pastor, elder, or overseer.

“The office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture,” Mohler told more than 11,000 registered messengers at the SBC Annual Meeting. He argued that the denomination needed constitutional clarity and warned that the issue marks “a great line” between biblical evangelicalism and liberal theology.

The amendment received 6,028 votes in favor and 2,026 against, surpassing the two-thirds threshold required for its first vote. However, it is not yet part of the SBC Constitution. Messengers must approve it again by a two-thirds majority at the 2027 Annual Meeting before it can be formally adopted.
