Bexar County Judge Rosie Speedlin-Gonzalez — reported to be the first openly LGBT judge elected in the county — has agreed to permanently step down from the bench and accept a lifetime ban from serving as a judge in Texas following multiple misconduct controversies.
The case gained national attention after allegations that she unlawfully ordered an attorney to be handcuffed and detained in her courtroom. Under the agreement, criminal charges against her were dropped, but she is now permanently disqualified from holding judicial office in the state.
