Carrie Underwood Urges Faith on American Idol

Carrie Underwood says you don’t have to “sell your soul” to succeed in entertainment — but you do have to stand firm in your faith.

More than 20 years after winning American Idol, Underwood returned to the show as a judge and openly pointed aspiring artists back to God.

“You are going to have to stand strong in your faith and remember who got you here, because it wasn’t you,” she said.

During its Easter-week “Songs of Faith” special, Underwood joined contestants in singing the hymn “How Great Thou Art,” while judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan opened with “Jesus Is Love.”

Underwood praised the show for being “bold” enough to embrace faith publicly in an industry where she says it’s “not easy.”
