The American Bible Society’s 15th annual State of the Bible report indicates that regular Scripture reading may be one of the most powerful forms of self care. Drawing on responses from 2,656 adults across the United States, the study found that people who consistently engage with the Bible tend to report less stress, anxiety, and loneliness—and greater hope—than those who rely primarily on activities such as exercise, social interaction, or meditation.
Participants who read the Bible weekly showed notably lower stress and anxiety levels than non-readers. Researchers suggest this benefit is tied to the encouragement, perspective, and hope that come from a relationship with God, especially during difficult seasons.
