When Jesus was pierced on the cross, blood and water flowed out (John 19:34). This wasn’t just a medical detail—it was deeply symbolic. The blood paid for our sin. So what was the water for? Before Jesus, we aren’t just sinful—we are dead. Throughout Scripture, water represents LIFE, cleansing, and the Spirit. Jesus promised:
“Whoever believes in Me… out of his belly [innermost being] will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38)
The inclusion of the water pouring out with the blood in John’s record of the Gospel portrays not only the redemptive aspect of what Jesus accomplished, but also the divine life-imparting aspect.
