New Cowboys first-round pick Caleb Downs gave glory to God and openly spoke about his faith moments after being drafted. In the interview, Downs began by saying, “First of all, I just want to say thank God. Without that, none of us would be here. Just thanks for my Savior, Jesus Christ,” before turning to the conversation he had just had with the team.
Asked about joining Dallas and speaking with Jerry Jones, Downs said he was overwhelmed with excitement in the moment. “It was a great conversation,” he said. “I honestly couldn’t hear him much. I was too excited to listen.” He added that he is now focused on helping the team and said he is “just excited to do what I can do and be committed to the team.”
Downs also spoke about his family’s football background and the role faith has played in their journey. Reflecting on carrying on that legacy, he said, “That’s an awesome feeling. Honestly, God’s blessed us with a lot of favor to be in this situation. And I’m so thankful to be here.” He also praised his family, saying, “I can’t even say enough words about them. There’s a lot of love there.”
The moment stood out not only because of Downs’ excitement after being selected, but because he chose to begin the interview by publicly thanking God and honoring Jesus Christ before talking about football, his future with the Cowboys, or his family legacy.
