A Chinese high school textbook has rewritten the Bible’s account of John 8, changing the story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery.
In the original passage, Jesus stops the crowd from stoning the woman and says, “He who is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.” But the altered version says that after the crowd left, Jesus stoned the woman himself and said, “I am also a sinner.”
Christian advocates say the rewritten passage is part of the Chinese Communist Party’s effort to reshape the Bible around “socialist values.” ChinaAid President Bob Fu said children’s Bibles have been banned, Bible apps removed, and some Christian children pressured to renounce their faith.
Advocates warn the move directly distorts the biblical image of Jesus.
