Cyrus Decree Confirmed by Archaeology

In 539 BC, Babylon fell to Cyrus the Great—and with it came one of the most remarkable proclamations in ancient history. According to both the Bible and archaeology, Cyrus issued a decree restoring religious freedom and allowing exiled peoples to return home.

The Bible records this clearly:
“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia… whoever is among His people, let him go up to Jerusalem and rebuild the house of the Lord.” (Ezra 1:1–4)

In 1878, archaeologists uncovered the Cyrus Cylinder in the ruins of Babylon. Now housed in the British Museum, this clay inscription describes how Cyrus:
• Ended forced labor
• Restored temples
• Returned displaced peoples to their homelands
• Promoted peace across his empire

Because of this, the United Nations has recognized the Cyrus Cylinder as the world’s first declaration of human rights—and a replica is displayed at the UN today.

But the evidence doesn’t stop there.

After this decree, a Persian province called Yehud (Judea) appears in historical records—something that could only exist if the Jewish people had returned. Even more striking, archaeologists have discovered coins minted with the name “Yehud”, proving not only the return to Zion, but the reestablishment of Jewish life, governance, and worship centered in Jerusalem.

Once again, archaeology confirms what Scripture recorded all along!
