Puerto Rican music star Daddy Yankee, one of reggaeton’s most influential artists, announced that he is retiring from music to devote his life to his Christian faith. The singer, born Ramón Ayala, made the declaration during the final show of his farewell tour, La Meta, at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan.
In a televised and social media speech, Yankee said he had long felt a void in his life that success and fame could not fill. “I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him,” he told the crowd.
Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged that material accolades could not satisfy the soul, echoing the Bible’s teaching that gaining the world is worthless if one loses one’s spirit. “Someone was able to fill that emptiness that I felt,” he said, describing his decision as “a new beginning.”
Yankee announced he will now go by his given name, Ramón Ayala, and said he intends to use his influence and platforms to advance his faith and share the message of Jesus Christ with fans. “To all the people who followed me, follow Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life,” he said, quoting Scripture.
