Faith Over Football: Jameis Winston’s Humbling Season

Jameis Winston has consistently spoken about his Christian faith as the foundation of his life, beyond football. Raised in a Southern Baptist environment, he has described his faith not as a side of his identity, but as its center, saying plainly: “My identity is never in football, but in Christ.”

That belief was tested most deeply after 2019, when his NFL career took an unexpected turn. Winston recalled that period as a major humbling moment: “After 2019, I went from freaking the fifth-year option to that minimum… behind Drew Brees at the New Orleans Saints.” He described joining a team that had previously beaten his own as having to “go be with the enemy.”

Rather than breaking him, Winston said the struggle reshaped him. “That humbling process allowed me to embrace a city that I grew to really, really love and impact,” he said. During that same season, his personal life changed as well: “I got married that same year, that COVID year. I had my second son in New Orleans.”

He reflected on that chapter as formative, even though it didn’t unfold as he had hoped: “Still it didn’t turn out how I would have envisioned, but it calloused me to be able to endure anything.” For Winston, faith gave meaning to disappointment, because “success was in the struggle.”

Throughout his career, Winston has emphasized that faith steadies him regardless of wins or losses. He often quotes Scripture, including “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it,” and “I can do all things through him that strengthens me.” He has also urged believers to be bold, saying: “We’re not called to be lukewarm, let’s be hot, let’s be on fire for Jesus.”

For Winston, football is temporary, but faith is enduring — the lens through which he understands both hardship and growth.
