Faith Through Loss: The PenaVegas’ Journey

After the stillbirth of their daughter Indy in April 2024, Carlos and Alexa PenaVega have shared how their Christian faith has sustained them through grief. The couple described the loss as a “painful journey,” yet said they have found peace in God’s presence. “God continues to comfort and hold us in his arms. The prayers from the community around us have been so sustaining in this difficult season,” they wrote.

In a later interview, Alexa said, “God has really been meeting us where we’re at, and He’s just been providing us so much peace. … He’s been the only reason we’ve been able to get through this season.” She described their grief as a “roller coaster” but emphasized what she believes God has shown them: “When you give your pain to God, He will turn it into purpose.” She called this season “pain with purpose,” adding, “His intention was not for us to feel this pain. … He is going to turn this pain around.”

Married since 2013, the couple have consistently spoken publicly about their faith. Carlos reflected on how their spiritual growth has been gradual: “Our hearts were slowly changed over the years.” He admitted that early in their marriage they balanced Bible study with nightlife before realizing, “This probably doesn’t add up.” “The more that we let God into our hearts, the more He started changing and molding us,” he said.

Their latest film, Mr. Manhattan, explores themes of faith, grief and family — subjects they say mirror their own journey. Carlos said, “If our faith didn’t influence our choices, I’d be questioning my walk with God.” Alexa added, “Sanctification is a journey. The more we know the Lord, the more we want to reflect Him in our day-to-day life.”

Through loss, marriage and career decisions, the PenaVegas say they have learned to wrestle with God rather than treat faith as transactional. “He wants you to come to Him. He wants you to ask questions. He wants you to wrestle with Him so that you have to rely on Him to live your life,” Alexa said.
