Gospel Breakthrough on Netflix’s Star Search

A live episode of Netflix’s “Star Search” turned into an explicit Gospel moment when contestant Bear Bailey performed “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” prompting a powerful faith-centered exchange with judge Jelly Roll. After finishing the song, Bailey openly testified about his past and his faith, telling the audience, “I’m a very imperfect person loved by a perfect God and Jesus. Jesus has redeemed me. … I’ve lost everything because of addictions, and I’m not perfect, but I serve a God who is, and he believes in redemption.”

Visibly emotional, Jelly Roll struggled to respond before explaining the moment through his own faith. “I prayed this morning. I said, God, give me an opportunity to talk about you,” he said. “God, you called me here to talk about you.” He then addressed the room directly: “What I just seen was a room full of people that might not have ever felt it before, but that is called the Holy Spirit of God.” Emphasizing grace and redemption, he added, “He don’t care anything about your past. He doesn’t care what you’ve been through. He doesn’t care about your drug addiction. He is your Father.”

Jelly Roll concluded by centering the message of the Gospel on Christ’s love, saying, “He hung so you can stand here and sing His name on the biggest streaming service in the world. … He is a redeemer. He is for everybody. Jesus is for everybody. He doesn’t hate anybody. He loves everybody.” Judges praised Bailey’s performance, with Jelly Roll telling him, “You, my friend, can win this show,” as the moment resonated with viewers as a rare, unfiltered proclamation of faith on a major streaming platform.
