Harvard’s Christian Roots

Today Harvard University is known as one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
But when it was founded in 1636, its purpose was very different from it is accomplishing today.

The early rules of Harvard College stated that students should be taught to recognize:

“Christ as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning.”

The goal of the school was to train ministers and ensure the colonies had educated pastors who could teach the Bible. In fact, one of Harvard’s earliest mottos was simply:

“Truth for Christ and the Church.”

In other words:

One of America’s most famous universities was originally established to train Christian ministers and promote biblical learning.
