Christian advocacy groups report a new incident of severe persecution in India, where Hindu nationalists destroyed the homes of Christian families who refused to renounce their faith. According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide, a mob of around 20 people confronted four Christian families and two individuals in a village in Maharashtra state, issuing an ultimatum to “renounce their faith in Jesus or face death.”
CSW stated that “despite receiving death threats, the families refused to comply,” prompting the mob to return and demolish the homes of four families. When the victims sought help from local authorities the next day, they were met with hostility. Police allegedly sided with the Hindu villagers, questioned the families’ decision to embrace Christianity, and threatened further consequences.
CSW reported that authorities later summoned the local pastor, declared his ministry “superstition,” and barred him from visiting the affected families. The Christian families remain without shelter during winter conditions and continue to face daily threats.
Commenting on the incident, CSW founder Mervyn Thomas said, “It is deeply concerning to witness the grave and unacceptable assault and humiliation these families have been subjected to on account of their religion,” adding that the failure of police protection has “emboldened the perpetrators.” He called on authorities to urgently ensure the families’ safety, restore their rights, and hold those responsible accountable.
The incident comes amid rising violence against Christians in India, with advocacy groups warning that anti-conversion laws and weak enforcement are contributing to increased attacks and vulnerability for religious minorities.
