Hundreds of people placed their faith in Christ this weekend as evangelist Franklin Graham preached the Gospel in Ushuaia, Argentina — known as the world’s southernmost city and often called the “city at the end of the world.”
The two-night “Esperanza Ushuaia” outreach was held at the José “Cochocho” Vargas Stadium, about 650 miles from Antarctica. With Ushuaia reporting the highest suicide rate in Argentina, the central theme of the event was hope — “esperanza” in Spanish.
Addressing thousands in attendance, Graham asked, “Are you running out of hope?” He preached from Mark 10, focusing on the story of the blind beggar Bartimaeus.
“Bartimaeus had no hope,” Graham said. “He thought nobody could help him. There’s nothing he could do but sit on the side of the road … But he cried out to Jesus.”
Drawing a parallel to the crowd, he added, “In the same way, there’s nothing you can do to get rid of your sins. You cannot save yourself. Will you come to Christ tonight?”
According to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the arena was filled both nights, with overflow areas accommodating additional attendees. After the message, hundreds reportedly responded to the invitation to repent and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation.
Reflecting on the outreach, Graham said, “It was such a privilege to preach the Gospel here at the southernmost city of the world! … The Good News is that God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, from Heaven to this earth to save us. He took our sin on the Cross, shed His blood, was buried, and God raised Him to life on the third day! We give God the glory for each one who responded to the invitation.”
