Hungary Tightens LGBTQ Restrictions in Education and Public Life

Hungary has moved to reinforce and expand restrictions on LGBTQ content and ideology in education and public life, a continuation of its conservative “child protection” policy. As part of these changes, the country’s constitution now explicitly states that “the mother is a woman and the father is a man,” language adopted to define family and gender in traditional terms and to bar adoption by same‑sex couples.

The government says these measures are intended to shield children from what it sees as harmful ideology and to preserve traditional family structures rooted in Hungary’s constitutional identity and Christian culture. Critics at home and abroad, however, argue the laws discriminate against LGBTQ individuals and restrict freedom of expression, especially in schools and media.
