John 8:58–59 shows the crowd understood exactly what Jesus was claiming. When He said, “Before Abraham was, I AM,” He wasn’t just saying He existed before Abraham. He was using divine language tied to God’s name in Exodus. That’s why they picked up stones. They heard it as blasphemy—unless it was true.
