An Indiana music teacher has secured a $650,000 settlement after a years-long dispute over his Christian convictions in the classroom.
John Kluge, who taught at Brownsburg High School, said he could not use student names and pronouns that conflicted with his faith. The school first permitted him to address students by their last names as a compromise, but later withdrew that accommodation following complaints, after which he resigned.
Kluge sued under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, claiming the district failed to reasonably accommodate his religious beliefs. Rather than proceed to trial, the district agreed to a settlement.
