Christian comedian John Crist has opened up about the darkest season of his life following a 2019 scandal that forced him to step away from ministry and public life, and how he says he was restored through grace.
After building a large following with church-centered humor, Crist cancelled his tour when multiple allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced. While disputing parts of the accusations, he admitted to “sinful” and “destructive” behavior and acknowledged struggles with addiction. He stepped away from the spotlight, entered therapy and began what he describes as a long process of healing.
Speaking on the Whoa That’s Good podcast with Sadie Robertson Huff, Crist revealed that he hit a breaking point in 2019 and wrestled with suicidal thoughts, believing his life had no future. After rehab and a social media hiatus, he returned in 2020 to what he called an “unbelievable amount of love” and “undeserved support.”
The grace he experienced, he said, “flipped my whole faith,” challenging the performance-driven mindset he had grown up with. Now sober for more than four years, Crist said he has learned to embrace vulnerability and accountability over image. “It’s so much better on this side. It’s so much more free, and you can be in a relationship with someone who does know you and knows all your secrets,” he said.
Reflecting on the response from supporters, he recalled, “Everybody knew everything about me, and they were like, ‘We love you.’” Despite returning to sold-out shows with his “Emotional Support Tour,” Crist remains cautious about elevating himself. “I’m not here to be like, ‘I’m fixed, follow me,’” he said.
Through failure, public scrutiny and recovery, Crist now describes his journey as one marked not by perfection, but by grace.
