The Apostle John was exiled to the Greek island of Patmos during the reign of Roman Emperor Domitian (AD 81–96) because of his preaching about Jesus. According to Revelation 1:9, John was sent there “because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.”
Early Christian writers such as Irenaeus and Eusebius confirmed that while on Patmos, John received the visions that later became the Book of Revelation.
Today, the island remains an important Christian destination, with the Cave of the Apocalypse marking the location where John is believed to have written his prophetic messages.
