Justin Fields Says His Purpose Goes Beyond Football

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields has been outspoken about his Christian faith through a difficult season, and he says his long-term purpose goes beyond football. In a recent conversation with The Walk Foundation podcast, Fields reflected on how God has carried him through setbacks — including being benched — and how those moments strengthened his desire to serve others.

In the interview, Fields described a breaking point when he felt God’s presence in a deeply personal way. He recalled that “my step-mom, my sister and my mom all sent me a text at the same time,” linking to a clip of him speaking about faith. Right after that moment, he said he went upstairs and “was hiding in the closet, crying on the floor… not because of my situation,” but because “God made me understand that He was always with me… and that I was doing His will.”

Fields also shared that his faith background began early: “I basically grew up in the church,” he said, noting his father “was actually a deacon in the church.” Over the past year, he said his walk became more personal, explaining that devotionals can sometimes feel like “a to-do list,” so he changed his routine and leaned into Scripture more intentionally. One passage that resonated with him recently was Philippians 4:6–7, which he summarized as God giving “peace beyond all understanding” amid uncertainty.

He repeatedly emphasized trusting God’s plan even when life doesn’t unfold as expected. “No matter what field we’re in… we all try to make some plans, but the end result may not always be what we want,” he said, adding that in those moments “you really have no choice but to put your hope in God and let Him take care of everything.” Fields also described his platform as a place where others can “see Him through me,” saying he prays to be put in positions where “people can see Him through me.”

Fields also opened up about an earlier health scare that shaped his dependence on God. He said he was diagnosed with epilepsy as a freshman and woke up in an ambulance after a seizure at school. “I didn’t know if I can play football,” he recalled, adding that at the time he could only pray and ask God to help him keep playing the sport he loved. Looking back, he said it showed that “God has a bigger plan for us.”

When asked what he hopes to do after football, Fields gave a direct answer: “I want to be a missionary,” he said. “Go to different countries, go to different places, spread His gospel… help people find Christ, help people have a relationship with Him.” He added that he’s been talking with friends about going somewhere — possibly “somewhere in Africa” — and said the desire to serve has been on his heart for a while. “I like to help people… serving others can bless others,” Fields said, noting he hopes to take his first mission trip as soon as this offseason.
