Kelsey Grammer Rebuilds Faith After Sister’s Murder

“Frasier” actor Kelsey Grammer said the 1975 murder of his 18-year-old sister, Karen, nearly destroyed his faith, describing how grief made his once-held belief feel “hollow” and led him to “curse God” and tell Him, “No thanks… I’d rather just handle this alone.”

Grammer said the trauma of Karen’s kidnapping, repeated rape and stabbing death in Colorado Springs shattered him at age 20 while he was studying at Juilliard. He noted the case continued to haunt him as he fought against the killer’s parole, saying the man’s desire for release kept Grammer feeling “still stuck,” and he framed it as a shared imprisonment: “If I don’t get free, you’re not either.”

In his memoir Karen: A Brother Remembers, Grammer honors his sister as his “best friend,” writing that her death “very nearly destroyed” him and that he has “never gotten over it.” He also connected his spiritual collapse to a series of earlier tragedies in his family, including his father’s murder during a home invasion and the later deaths of his two half-brothers in a scuba accident.

Despite years of anger and distance from God, Grammer said he now urges others not to turn away in suffering but to turn toward God. He credited love, family and time for gradually rebuilding his faith, saying his wife Kayte Walsh, their children (including a daughter named Faith), and the process of writing his book helped him regain spiritual ground.

He also said portraying Pastor Chuck Smith in the 2023 film Jesus Revolution contributed to a major “reawakening” of faith during the film’s promotion. Grammer emphasized he is not trying to force belief on others, but he refuses to hide his conviction, saying he will not deny Jesus Christ and that he has found “great peace” after “re-meeting” Jesus.
