Laus Deo on the Washington Monument

Most people have seen the Washington Monument towering over the National Mall.
But very few know what’s written at the very top of it.

When the monument was completed in 1884, the capstone was engraved with the Latin phrase: “Laus Deo.”

That means:
“Praise be to God.”

Inside the monument are also commemorative stones placed by states and organizations during construction in the 1800s. Many of them include Bible verses and references to Scripture. One example comes from John 5:39:

“Search the Scriptures.”

So at the highest point of one of America’s most recognizable monuments, the inscription reads:

“Praise be to God.”
