Lazarus Raised After Four Days

Lazarus Raised After Four Days (Gospel of John 11)
Complete Story

Lazarus of Bethany, the brother of Mary and Martha, fell gravely ill. The sisters sent word to Jesus, expecting Him to come immediately. But Jesus delayed—intentionally—saying the sickness would reveal God’s glory. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been dead four days, a period believed to confirm irreversible death.

Martha met Jesus with grief mixed with faith: “If You had been here…” Jesus replied, “I am the resurrection and the life.” At the tomb, Mary wept; the crowd mourned—and Jesus wept too. Yet He commanded the stone be rolled away, despite protests about the stench.

Jesus prayed aloud, then cried with authority, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man emerged, still bound in grave clothes. Jesus ordered them to unbind him. Many believed—but others hardened their hearts, setting events in motion toward the cross. The miracle showed not only power over death, but God’s timing, compassion, and purpose.
