Lucas Black: Family Over Fame

Actor Lucas Black says leaving “NCIS: New Orleans” in 2019 was a decision rooted in faith and family — one he has never regretted. The 41-year-old father of three said the demanding schedule ultimately led him and his wife to conclude that “enough was enough.”

“I chose to step away… because the schedule was long hours and gruesome,” Black said, explaining there was only “a short period of time” he could sacrifice being away from his family before it became a problem. As a husband and father, he reflected, focusing too heavily on career success can cause “relationships with our wives… or kids” to suffer, adding, “There’s got to be some healthy margin in your life.”

Black currently appears in the faith-based film “Unsung Hero,” which tells the story of the Smallbone family’s move from Australia to Nashville and their reliance on prayer, unity and community during hardship. He said the film resonates deeply because it highlights that “the most important relationships… are, number one, with their heavenly Father, but also their family.”

Calling the movie “a story about family and faith,” Black said audiences are hungry for wholesome content that honors marriage, perseverance and biblical values. He emphasized that the film does not shy away from struggle but shows reconciliation, forgiveness and growth.

Now more selective about roles, Black said he seeks projects that “uplift, encourage and promote Christian values” and “point people to God.” While acknowledging Hollywood’s shifting landscape, he expressed caution about broader industry agendas.

Open about his faith despite criticism, Black said he feels called “to be an encourager to the Body of Christ.” He added, “I stand up for what I believe in, I stand up for the Gospel,” and hopes to both “win lost souls” and strengthen fellow believers to remain bold in their faith.
