Mel Gibson said he plans to move forward with a sequel to The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of the Christ, during an interview with Joe Rogan. Gibson confirmed that Jim Caviezel will again portray Jesus, despite the 20-year gap since the original film, noting that modern CGI techniques can address the time difference.
Gibson said the project is “very ambitious” and unlike anything he has read before. He explained that the story will span far beyond the resurrection itself, beginning with the fall of the angels and extending to the death of the last apostle. The film will depict heaven, hell, Satan, and the spiritual realm, requiring extensive planning and theological depth.
He described the writing process as intense and experimental, saying the script was developed with his brother and writer Randall Wallace. Gibson said he has consulted biblical scholars and emphasized that the film is not about spectacle but about conveying deeper spiritual meaning. He added that while the project has taken a long time, he believes the timing is right and plans to begin pre-production before filming next year.
